About Us
Sound Of Silence Africa Initiative (SOSAI) was founded in May, 2023 by Ogwal Alex, a Ugandan who lost his hearing at the age of 13 due to sickness while in secondary school. This personal experience of living with a disability inspired him to create an organization that would support and empower children, youths, women, and refugees with disabilities in Uganda.
Ogwal Alex understands the challenges and discrimination faced by individuals with disabilities in his country. He recognized the lack of opportunities for education, employment, and social inclusion for this marginalized group. Moreover, he witnessed firsthand the limited resources available to support their needs and motivated by a desire to make a difference, Ogwal Alex established SOSAI as a not-for-profit organization.
He quotes “the experience of facing rejections, stigma and societal prejudice hits so hard like a waves at the shores, we need to stand up collectively and do something so that people with disabilities can coexist with us .”
SOSAI aims to break down barriers and challenge societal stereotypes surrounding disability. By raising awareness about the capabilities and potential of individuals with disabilities, they strive to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all as well as recognizing the specific challenges faced by women and refugees with disabilities who often face multiple layers of discrimination. They prioritize their needs by offering specialized programs that address their unique circumstances.
Support Alex’s dreams and visions of changing narratives that persons with disabilities go through in their lives through donations, volunteering, partnerships, and offering expertise.
